Theory of Forms

Columbia University First Year MFA Exhibition

Lenfest Center for the Arts, New York, NY

Curated by Regine Basha

June 2020

This corner installation is named after Plato’s Theory of Forms, a metaphysical concept which posits the physical world is not as real or true as Forms, the non-physical and unchangeable essence of all things. Objects and matter in the physical world merely imitate and resemble absolute Forms.

I am fascinated with the possibility that physical things are imitations of non-physical ideas. The real essence of objects, represented flatly or with dimensionality, their trajectories moving though the world, and how their meaning and identity mutate within various contexts are central questions explored in this piece.
